In honour of Love Your Bookshop Day, which is taking place this Saturday, October 9th, we wanted to shine a spotlight on some of our very favourite bookshops. First up, we spoke to Ange from beautiful Gleebooks.
Can you tell us a bit about your bookshop?
My bookshop is a piece of history that I feel proud to be part of.
What's the best thing about working a bookshop?
Being surrounded by stories.
Apart from your own, which is one of your favourite bookshops?
Hill of Content in Melbourne.
What does an average day at Gleebooks look like for you?
Browsing the shelves for books customers have requested, answering phones, writing reviews and recommending books.
Is there a book you recommend to almost any customer?
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.
Do you have a favourite book of all time?
My teenage self would have said Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh but now as an adult it's probably My Year of Rest & Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh.
What do you love most about reading?
For the escapism and the chance to live a different life for a few hours.
Any memorable customers that have stayed with you?
A memorable customer is one I've served across a few different bookstores I've worked at. He comes in every day on Love Your Bookshop Day to bookstores across Sydney to ask staff what their favourite book is. I assume he then spends the next year getting through them all...
What advice do you have for anyone that wants to work in a bookshop?
Just read. Read anything and everything that interests you.
What would you be doing if you didn't work in a bookshop?
I'd like to work in a cinema if I wasn't working in a bookshop.
