In honour of Love Your Bookshop Day, which is taking place this Saturday, October 9th, we wanted to shine a spotlight on some of our very favourite bookshops. Today, we're featuring Brisbane's best bookshop - the brilliant Avid Reader.
Can you tell us a bit about your bookshop?
Avid Reader is an award-winning independent bookshop in the heart of West-End, Brisbane.
What’s the best thing about working in a bookshop?
I love being part of a community of people who love reading and writing.
Apart from your own, which is one of your favourite bookshops?
I love all Australian bookshops; large and small, urban and regional.
What does an average day look like for you?
My average day includes carrying lots of boxes of books!
Is there a book you recommend to almost any customer?
I treat each customer as unique and always try to match the book to the reader.
Do you have a favourite book of all time?
I don't have a favourite book; I have an ever-changing top 10.
What do you love most about reading?
I love immersing myself in a different world, in different times with different and unique voices.
Any memorable customers that have stayed with you?
Stephen Fry once came to browse and shop.
What advice do you have for anyone who wants to work in a bookshop?
You need to love following systems, have an excellent memory for authors, titles and customer's names.
What would you be doing if you didn’t run a bookshop?
I'd buy and sell rare textiles.
